The Third Divine Pair

Lord Shiva & Devi Parvati

The great Transformer, absorbed in meditation on Mount Kailash, and the Divine Mother, the embodiment of shakti. Together they are Ardhanarishvara — stillness and energy, consciousness and power, inseparably one.

White as camphor, the very incarnation of compassion, the essence of existence.

The Why — Purpose of Prayer

Why we pray to Lord Shiva

Shiva is the destroyer of ignorance and the lord of transformation — the ascetic who drank poison to save the world and holds the Ganga in his matted locks. We turn to him to release what binds us: fear, ego, attachment and illness of body and mind. Prayer to Shiva is a prayer for inner freedom, healing and the courage to let go.

Why we pray to Devi Parvati

Parvati is shakti itself — the nurturing Mother who is also Durga the protector and the source of all divine energy. Devotees seek her blessing for harmony in marriage and family, for perseverance in tapasya, and for strength in every trial. Her own devotion won Shiva's heart; she teaches that love and discipline together move even the immovable.

Timings for Devotion

Mondays & Pradosham

Monday is Shiva's day, marked with fasting and abhishekam of the lingam. Pradosham — the twilight of the thirteenth lunar day — is especially cherished for his worship.

Maha Shivaratri & Shravan

The great night of Shiva is kept with all-night vigil, chanting and offerings of bilva leaves; the whole month of Shravan is sacred to him.

Devi's Days

Parvati is honoured on Tuesdays and Fridays, through the nine nights of Navratri, and at Teej, when women fast for the well-being of family and home.

Mantras & Meanings

The five sacred syllables for every moment of the day, and the great healing mantra for protection and fearlessness — chanted for oneself or on behalf of a loved one.

Short Chant · The Panchakshari

ॐ नमः शिवाय

Om Namah Shivaya

I bow to Shiva — the auspicious one, the inner Self. The five syllables Na-Mah-Shi-Va-Ya honour the five elements, and the chant purifies mind and heart. It may be repeated anywhere, at any time, aloud or in silence.

We worship the three-eyed one, fragrant, who nourishes all beings. As the ripe cucumber is freed from its vine, may we be liberated from death — but never from immortality. The great healing mantra of the Rig Veda, chanted 108 times for health, protection and freedom from fear.
