The Sacred Treasury

Gayatri Mantra & Evening Aarti

Two treasures for every household — the universal prayer for illumination, and the beloved aarti sung at dusk before the lamp.

The Gayatri Mantra

From the Rig Veda — the mother of all mantras

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥

Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat.

Meaning

We meditate upon the adorable radiance of the Divine, the source of the three worlds — earth, atmosphere and heaven. May that supreme light awaken our intellect and guide our thoughts along the right path.

When to chant

Traditionally recited at the three sandhyas — dawn, noon and dusk — and especially during Brahma Muhurta before sunrise. Chant softly, 3, 11 or 108 times.

Om Jai Jagdish Hare

The universal aarti — sung before the lamp at dusk

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare,

Bhakta jano ke sankat, daasa jano ke sankat, kshan mein door kare — Om Jai Jagdish Hare.

Jo dhyaave phal paave, dukh binase man ka, Swami dukh binase man ka,

Sukh sampatti ghar aave, kasht mite tan ka — Om Jai Jagdish Hare.

Maat pita tum mere, sharan gahoon main kiski, Swami sharan gahoon main kiski,

Tum bin aur na dooja, aas karoon main jiski — Om Jai Jagdish Hare.

Tum karuna ke saagar, tum paalan karta, Swami tum paalan karta,

Main sevak tum swami, kripa karo Bharta — Om Jai Jagdish Hare.

Meaning

Victory to the Lord of the universe, who removes the troubles of devotees in an instant. You are mother and father; in whom else shall we take refuge? Ocean of compassion, sustainer of all — we are your servants; shower your grace upon us.
